Fundraising event T-shirts boost awareness
Kiwimbi International opens in new window is a nonprofit working to empower underserved rural communities in Kenya through education support. Its work includes providing teaching assistants to schools, vocational training, literacy development and other enrichment projects—all designed to help individuals and communities reach their full potential.
The Prep for Success program uses specific teaching methods to help children with literacy and math skills, preparing them for the Kenyan Junior School Education Assessment—a required national exam—and providing students with a daily nutritious meal. Vocational training provides young adults carpentry and tailoring skills, and an agriculture program trains students in organic, sustainable farming practices and has established a community seed bank.
Making a difference a world away
The New Jersey–based nonprofit is connected to Kiwimbi Kenya, a nongovernmental organization based in Kenya. Together, the organizations strive to improve lives in ways that resonate for generations. “Kiwimbi means ‘ripple’ in Swahili,” said Lisa Connell, director of development and communications. “The idea is our impact spreads throughout the community like ripples.”
Whether supplying books to over 90 schools or preparing young adults for careers in tailoring, carpentry and art, Kiwimbi International’s life-changing work depends on the generosity of others.
Event T-shirts a keepsake for supporters
The Kiwimbi 5K/10K Run-Walk was an important event for the organization. Held on a sunny day in June, the fundraiser brought together more than 100 supporters. Among the festivities were Kenyan music and decorations, prizes handmade by Kenyan artists and mandazi—a doughnut-like treat popular in Africa—as a post-race treat.
A one by one grant provided event T-shirts opens in new window for participants. Along with serving as a souvenir and helping raise awareness for the run/walk, the shirts helped recognize event sponsors. The run/walk has grown in each of its four years—proof the organization’s ripples continue to spread. The run/walk has grown in each of its four years—proof the organization’s ripples continue to spread.
