Empowering individuals, enriching communities

Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta opens in new window is a nonprofit dedicated to providing lifelong connections to people with Down syndrome and their families. Launched by a small group of parents in 1979, the organization has grown to offer resources, education, peer support and more to upwards of 800 families across 18 metro Atlanta counties.

Programs include workshops and seminars, networking and support groups, transportation for medical appointments and therapies, and a summer camp specifically for individuals with Down syndrome. The organization’s work is driven by a handful of employees and a team of about 75 volunteers.

Fall event brings the community together

Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta organizes several events throughout the year—including a holiday party in December and a World Down Syndrome Day gathering in March—to further its mission and rally support. An annual Buddy Walk®—held in October during Down Syndrome Awareness Month—is a celebration and fundraiser that brings families and friends together for a walk, games, inflatables, crafts, music and more.

About 1,500 people united at the Marietta campus of Kennesaw State University for the 2025 event. “It’s a huge celebration where everybody comes together,” said Denise Arribas, director of engagement. “The focus is on helping these children and adults with Down syndrome navigate their lives with dignity and community. There’s so much to love.”

Promotional pom-poms were worth cheering about

A one by one grant provided branded pom-poms opens in new window given in event swag bags to families. Customized in the organization’s brand colors of blue and yellow and imprinted with the logo, the pom-poms added to the festive environment and were a hit with the younger attendees. “For families, it’s a powerful moment to see their loved ones cheered on and represented,” Arribas said. “The pom-poms were great not only because they were fun, but because they were a beautiful way to have all our kiddos celebrate—including those with noise sensitivity. They really helped us spread pride, inclusion and pure happiness one shake at a time!”
