Donor appreciation gifts to spread holiday cheer

Momentum Center opens in new window is a Michigan nonprofit focused on mental health, social inclusion and fostering community. It provides regular programming for people dealing with challenges related to mental health; mental, physical or intellectual disabilities; substance abuse recovery; and more. “We provide social interaction and community for people who could otherwise be very isolated because of their mental health or physical condition,” said Michael Cansfield, development director.

The center offers programming five days a week, which includes anything from yoga and other exercise classes to games, arts and crafts activities, current events conversations and karaoke. In addition, it hosts weekly community outings and experiences, like trips to local parks or zoos. The nonprofit also connects members with resources and support, including counseling and therapy.

Momentum Center grew out of an organization launched in 2015 with the mission of helping people extend grace to one another. The center opened in Grand Haven in 2017, and a second location was added in nearby Holland, Michigan, in 2022. Across the two sites, seven full-time employees, a handful of part-time employees and more than 100 volunteers serve about 400 center members. Together, Momentum Center staff, volunteers and members foster an environment where often-disenfranchised individuals can build healthy relationships, engage in positive activities, and move out of isolation and into productive social interactions.

Ornaments to be given as donor appreciation gifts

A one by one grant provided promotional holiday ornaments opens in new window to be given as donor appreciation gifts at Santa in Centertown, an annual holiday fundraising event in Grand Haven. While planning for 2025 is still in progress, last year’s event featured appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus and a few of their reindeer. Momentum Center will again hold a fundraising bake sale, where its team will be handing out the ornaments to those who make a purchase or cash donation.

“Because our logo is on the ornament, it’s a way for people to remember our organization and our members during the holidays,” Cansfield said. “That can be a difficult time for people with mental illness or other issues that can keep them in isolation.”
